About Alstonia Scholaris

The Botanical name of this plant is Alstonia Scholaris with its Generic name being derived from the botanist Prof. Alston of Edinburgh. The species name ‘Scholaris’ is a reference that the timber of this tree has been traditionally used to make wooden slats for the children in schools.

This plant has large leaves which grow in clusters of seven and a bark which is rough and grey. Small and greenish-yellow coloured flowers bloom on this tree. The fruits on this tree are thin pods and can acquire a height up to 20 inches. The sap of Alstonia Scholaris is sticky and bitter.
